The Library

After a brief hiatus, physical workbooks are returning to the classroom—not as a rejection of technology, but as a strategic tool for authentic assessment. By reintroducing these "old school" methods, teachers can move beyond the "fake" learning often enabled by AI and digital shortcuts. This shift restores the teacher's role as a mentor and provides the confidence that students are demonstrating true mastery rather than just clicking through a screen.

Think about online review: when a student "guesses" their way to a correct answer, the system generates a false positive that masks a lack of conceptual understanding. Conversely, a student might grasp a complex idea but receive a hard "incorrect" mark simply for making a common arithmetic error - the kind of thing that teachers typically give partial credit for.

Physical workbooks require students to "show what they know," transforming passive clicking into active mastery. By engaging with high-quality, pen-to-paper practice, students move past the surface level to develop true agency and a permanent skill set. In both English and Math, competencies discussed in a structured academic setting are retained longer; skills that are intentionally practiced become habits. There is no "one and done" solution—mastery is a process, not an event.  Tracey Hurst's workbooks embrace all of these ideas.
