Audience:

Grade-level content teams (Science, Social Studies, English, and electives) committed to shared literacy development. This workshop serves multiple grade-level teams simultaneously, equipping them to implement a high-impact, four-week literacy cycle.

Rationale:

The Failure of the "Siloed" Approach The TSIA 2.0, much like the SAT and ACT, is a test of foundational literacy—a skill developed in every classroom, not just the English wing. Cognitive science proves that true literacy requires spaced practice: time for processing, reflection, and refinement. Because the majority of TSIA English readings are informational texts rooted in the humanities and sciences, the responsibility of college readiness must be shared. If students are only exposed to rigorous text in one room, they aren't being prepared; they are being sidelined.

The Solution: The 4-Week Integrated Cycle Aligned with the philosophy that "literacy is not achieved in a boot camp," Tracey offers a sustainable alternative. The Unboot Camp utilizes a strategic four-week block where students engage with TSIA-level rigor across three or more content areas. Using pre-made workbooks designed specifically for the first 10–15 minutes of class, teachers deliver targeted activities that bridge the gap between content standards and college-readiness expectations.

How It Works: Parallel Integration

The Unboot Camp turns every classroom into a literacy lab without forcing content teachers to become reading instructors:

  • In Biology: A 9th-grade student tackles a paired passage on taxonomy (Biology TEKS 8B). They practice identifying the main idea and author’s craft through a mix of free-response and TSIA-style multiple-choice questions. The biology teacher supports the test structure without being responsible for teaching English conventions.

  • In Geography: That same student transitions to World Geography to engage in Collaborative Group Work. Students analyze diverse texts on Centrifugal Forces, collaborating to solve free-response questions aligned directly to TSIA 2.0 English standards.

  • In English: To close the loop, students complete an optional writing assignment for homework, specifically aligned to the demands of the WritePlacer essay, ensuring the English teacher's grading remains focused on high-leverage writing skills.

  • Portable Workbook: Each student carries his/her workbook throughout the day, recording accomplishments, promoting student agency, and empowering students to recognize when they are ready for the TSIA 2.0 English test!
